Hi all

After reading the helpful feedback on the 1.2 petrol I have decided to go for a 1.6 petrol auto. Having just phoned round several dealers, none have one in stock for a test drive and I was lead to believe that it was unlikely that I would find one. When I asked what previous buyers of this model had done I was informed that most had been bought without a test drive and as far as they know there are no complaints.

So, it looks like I may have to buy one without the test drive. In light of this I would be very interested to hear views from those who have one, particularly how well (quietly) it cruises on the motorway.

TIA, Steve

Try this Youtube video athough the reviewer only mentions he is driving the 1.6 petrol auto.

I've ordered the GT without having seen one let alone have a test drive!

Thanks Fontie, yes that's the one, I tried to be clever and set up a link without dispaying the Youtube start screen to save space. Should have seen how it worked in 'preview post' first!

I too ordered one without a test drive. I drove the 1.2 but wasn`t impressed with the motorway performance. The guy at my dealership said he drove one when he went abroad for the launch and he said it was very nice and quiet, although i did see a review in a magazine that said the 1.6 coupled with the auto box was "woeful". However every other review i have seen gives it the thumbs up so i can only assume that sole reviewer was either been paid to slate it or he was a total A***H*** who had probably just forked out twice as much for a merc and realized he`d been ripped off.

Pick mine up on Thursday :-D

If Peugeot had utilised cylinder deactivation a 1.6l could become a 1.2l under low power conditions thereby providing the best of both worlds. I dont know anythng about the technology so I could be completely wrong.

As stuart.bush says I recall a review where it was recommended to chose the 1.2 over the 1.6.

The 1.6 Petrol is the ageing 1.6 unit. That's the only point.. but look at a video and it has a reasonable turn of speed.

The thing is a crankshaft for 3 cylinders and 4 cylinders would be different due to work with the number of pistons. Unless it can vary the positions of the pistons on the crankshaft then.. that's only applicable where you have a large number of cylinders and removing one or two cylinders from the firing has less impact.

Definatley better choice than 1.2 unless you drive only in the city.

I think maybe people get too hung up on the size of the engine rather than thinking about the horsepower, there's no reason a 130bhp engine should struggle on a motorway, that's the kind of power you'd get from a 2 litre not too long ago!

Small engines is just a hype and means to save money for car manufacturers.

If you can afford a decent size engine and fuel, then there's no reason to buy smaller engines which struggle hard to achieve the same or worse results

I believe the 1.2 puretech engine has won international engine of the year 2015 and 2016 so that's a pretty sound recommendation. It's modern technology too - I've read a few reviews of the 3008 where the reviewers have said this would be their engine of choice.

I can understand why people will think the 1.2 would be underpowered, I mean a 3 cylinder 1.2 on a car like the 3008 must be crap and underpowered. Wrong Wrong Wrong as unbelievable at it may seem the 1.2 is a punchy little motor remember its only just over one or two second slower to 60 than the 1.6 its amazing don't disregard it until you have had a test drive in one. I almost guarantee you will be amazed. As far as struggling on the motorway it will cruise at 80 quite happily letting you have a normal conversation. I got my 3008 based on the 1.2 reviews only I took out a diesel version when I ordered my car, I was gobsmacked when I put my foot down for the first time in mine. Find a dealer that has one take it for a test drive.

Yeah, like international engine awards of the year mean smth. :)

Also, THP has also won a number of awards.

Its all about what is stylish and trendy now and for cars its smaller engines (mainly because of emission nonsense).

In the end its just about what are your needs, if you want a smaller, eco engine with low emissions, then go for it, if you want a practical work beast, go for bigger a engine.

I think the engine award means that it's a good engine. I'm no expert though.
Subtle. Brick ;) :D

It seems to have a good turn of speed looking at the videos. The car only weighs about the same a 2006 MKII focus..

If you're moving heavy loads then power at the crank (torque) vs high revs (hp)+gears.

Only reason I went for the 1.6D-120 is we've had 300+Kg in the focus in the past. However to be honest, not much between them given the fuel economy with 3cylinders is going to be decent! I always wonder a little bit on 'smoothness' where 1/3 crank vs 1/4 crank leads to a smoother turn however the auto and gearing would compensate well on that too.. only thing is shorter gears to allow the revs on a 6 speed will mean a compromise at some point however ... modern engine, probably copes with 99% of people's daily use..

The main reason I chose to order the 1.2 was my last car was a Ford with the 1 litre 3 cyl ecoboost engine and it was a revalation. Smoother than any 4 cyl I've ever had or been in and pound for pound more power as well. Hoping the Peugeot will be as good.

If you like a diesel, you'll love it
If you want petrol power, you'll love it.
Hit 'resume' and it won't bother going above 2500 and it will climb motorway hills in top (6th).
Probably a longer lasting engine as well.
If only they would do a 1.6 version.
