Hi guys,

Just thought I'd share my experience with a coolant leak problem with my
407 1.6 hdi.
I've been losing coolant constantly since I bought the car but couldn't for the
life of me find any leak.

Engine performance and economy was fine and there was no evidence of water
in the oil.

Anyway, I finally found the leak by accident.

The small oil cooler which bolts on to the oil filter casing (rectangular box with fins situated directly below the turbo) was dripping - once every 3 seconds. This only happened when the engine was running and the system pressurised.

This is a relief as it is easily changed (£35 on fleabay).

I have done a bit of research and found that the heat shield from the DPF can rub against the cooler (which has thin alloy walls) and wear through.

So, if anyone has a mysterious leak, have a quick look there before delving into the depths of the engine.

Cheers

Happy New Year!

Snap, I had this back in October, bit of a design flaw! I also bent the heat shield round a bit in the hope it won't happen again. On the 307 it's a bit of a pain to change the oil cooler as the radiator has to come out so you can get the tools in to undo the torx bolts, dpf and cat can stay on. Put in some 5 year coolant and I swear the temperature runs ever so slightly higher, still 2000 miles on it seems OK.
