Question Low spec steering wheels and instruments on some Travellers

I have noticed something odd while reviewing the online stock of used cars for the Peugeot Traveller & Citroen Spacetourer at dealers. Some Traveller Business, and Active models and the equivalent Citroen Spacetourer Business & Feel versions come with the lower spec instruments from the Van version and a steering wheel without the buttons. But, many other Business, Active & Citroen Feel cars though seem to have a different much smarter instrument pack and a steering wheel with buttons. The lower spec instruments can be spotted easily as they have the black dial surrounds and a black & white dot matrix display between the dials. The posher set have chrome surrounds and a colour LCD display between the dials that shows more functionality. To my eye the chrome set look much nicer as does the higher spec steering wheel.

The set-up a car is delivered with looks random, but clearly it can't be, so are possibly determined by the options ordered. Assuming that the basic instruments and wheel with no buttons are the standard spec for the Business and mid range vehicles, does anyone know what options have to be ordered to ensure that the higher spec steering wheel and instrument pack come with the car ? Some purchasers might be disappointed if they order a new car and only get the cheaper wheel and instrument pack, so it would be worth knowing what options to go for to ensure that they get the better set up. The brochure and detailed specification leaflets say nothing about this.

Hi Yobbo,

when these originally brought out last year there was 8 variants if I remember rightly. Now there are only 5 that can be ordered.
Also I note the lead time is 47 weeks, like people are going to wait almost a year when they can get another make in 3.

I think these will be discontinued in the UK as they are clearly not selling.

To answer your question, the only way to be sure is to buy an allure or see ask the dealer to confirm. It maybe the steering wheel controls come with the upgraded hifi that's in the allure or possibly ordered as an extra.

I am slightly more optimistic about the UK supply. There have been production problems and demand has exceeded expectations. PSA have just announced a couple of weeks ago that they are about to add a fourth shift at the Sevel Nord factory and another production line is planned for Russia.

Back on topic I have been looking at the Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch vans online and 95% of those have the basic instruments and steering wheel, but a small number have the upgraded instrument set with the better steering wheel with the buttons, but I can't quite pin down what triggers that from the options list. It is not the centre screen as nearly all vehicles have those now. It could be something such as the Active cruise with autobrake option that might specifically need the LCD display or something similar that determines what is fitted.

When I pick up my new car I will ask the dealer if they know.

There are 2 screen options that is possibly available on the vans? One is the "basic" satnav what one can add mirror link to and the other is the 3D connected TomTom satnav as is in my traveller. Maybe that's the thing with the steering wheel? I got the upgraded wheel you describe.

I asked the dealer about this and they were not sure. It looks like though for the Business and mid range models that if Satnav, Radar cruise with active safety brake or the HUD are ordered then the car seems to get built with the better steering wheel & instruments.

Mine was a slightly unusual order, in that I ordered the radar cruise but not the HUD, nor the Nav either, but it did thankfully come with the higher spec wheel and instruments. I suspected that it would, as when I looked at the owners manual before the car was delivered it showed that the radar cruise needs the colour LCD instrument display between the Speedo and tacho to show distances dynamically and the LCD display only seems to come with the better instruments and the steering wheel with buttons.

Morning Yobbo,

When you say lcd screen, do you mean the one in the middle between the speedo and rev counter? Or the infotainment screen above the heater controls?

There is a lot of difference between the low end models and higher spec. The lower end don't even have auto heating? Very basic.

Yes, it is the one between the Speedo and the tacho.

If someone was about to place an order for an Expert van or the non-top model of the Traveller or Spacetourer then this could be important information to avoid disappointment, as all the Traveller brochures show is the better set up. Even the Peugeot Expert van brochure only shows the better instrument pack and steering wheel and not the more basic set up that 80% will be delivered with.

I didn'y know there was a variant without the center LCD until you now mention it. You have to assume prospective buyers would do their homework as you clearly have. If not there's only them to blame.

I thought you had been talking about the screen in the middle of the dash at first. That's why I talked about the satnav..
