Default Clattery engine noise

Ive been using the van on a regular basis for a good two years, have it serviced when service light comes on and generally try and look after it. I have to say its been a reliable van. One issue it has is when its running for more than about 50 miles the engine becomes very clattery and it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine. It doesnt burn any oil, I had the cam belt done when I bought it several years back. My mechanic thinks it could be drawing air in somewhere because when the primer is pumped and the van is left overnight the noise disappears. I only use the van as a run around on short runs (20miles) so Ive managed to live with it. Now Iím looking to sell and would like to try and get it sorted.

The van is a partner 1.6L HDI 2007 any advice would be gratefully received. A neighbour has said that it could be short of oil at the top of the engine? I really know very little about Diesel engines. What I would really like to find out is wether or not it’s okay as it is to sell on ? Although it gets noisy it’s never let me down in nearly 3 years (12000 miles)
