Default is there any hacker type pc guys on here?

I have a mate who has a gmail email account
so the account is hosted on the google servers?

he sent some pictures of his GF to his work email and says that this is safe because he has now deleted the emails on both accounts

he says he can delete emails and that when they are deleted they are gone and no one can ever retrieve them
I disagree as only google would have the facilities and know how to completely delete his previous emails from their servers so no one could ever read them

so who is right?
cheers

Also if he sent the pictures of his GF to his work email then those pictures will be on his employers server.

He can delete them from his mailboxes but they will indeed be in a backup location on both Google's and his employer's email servers.

Even if they were deleted on the servers they would still be on the servers hard drive. Deleting files only removes the reference to them in the file record. The only way to 'delete' the files is to use a secure wiping program but forensic hardware and software can in some instances retrieve information from the disc sub surface. The only way of totally deleting anything stored on a hard disc is to subject the disc platter to immense heat. But that level of deletion is really only for the truly paranoid

You can effectively wipe a hard drive using DBAN (Dariks Boot & Nuke) it overwrites the drive using Mersenne Twister or OPSII using a number of passes. On the verify pass it writes zero's on the drive restoring it back to Factory Settings.
