Default Lost in Translation ...

Our 6 months French property renovation project (about €3,000 spent on plasterboard & metal studwork alone ...) has now entered its 5th year and won't be finished in the immediate future ...

So, I looked wistfully at the new, modern designed houses that are springing up around the village in small cul-de-sacs called "Cité de (name of street)". The Cité immediately up the hill from our hovel is named "Cité des Messanges" - when I looked up the translation in the dictionary, I decided that, modern house or not, I would not wish to live in "The City of Tits" ...

Better still, as I was driving out of the village and waiting to join the main road at the roundabout, a huge articulated lorry with a plain white trailer (other than the company name) passed across my path. Emblazoned on the side of the trailer was "Maitre Coq" ...

I'm not sure whether the driver was boasting or whether there were lots of male chickens inside the trailer - I shudder to contemplate the dimensions of a single Master Cock that needs an articulated lorry to transport it

Those Lotissements do represent great value, some were advertised in a nearby village, about 1000 square metre plots with all services on site, going for €3.00 per square metre. You have to supply the house of course, but planning is already given. That's cheaper than most though, the normal price is nearer €10 - 13 per sq m.

The use of the word Messanges more likely refers to the town in Aquitaine.
