Default Egypt

As expected the army have deposed Morsi.

I'm in 2 minds about the current situation. It has been made clear to Morsi that his tenure is, to say the least, fragile. Common sense would dictate that he call an election - whether one was due or not - if nothing else but to maintain his position a little longer.

The army stepping in is another issue entirely, they claim that their actions are in support of the people - but there are also those who support Morsi.

Morsi's claim to the presidency is at best 'dodgy' - the election process supposedly corrupt. Deposing him, he tells us, is therefore contrary to the peoples will - which is a fairly nebulous argument.

His 'temporary' replacement, a senior judge, tells us that a fair and open election is the only way forward - so why didn't Morsi take this approach? Has he got something to hide perhaps?

On balance, I think the recent developments are a 'good' thing for democracy.
