I'm just about to start rebuilding my diag laptop so I have all this to look forward to, the joys!

There's no reason you can't just do a disk image and dump it over to your SSD when its in, saves a lot of hassle!

Tried that, it didn't work. My assistant says its because an SSD and magnetic hard drive are just too different to do this.

I've done this before, what software did you use?

The only thing to look out for is that its recommended to have 20% free on an SSD, you also have to align it before use but this can be done using diskpart

I believe the 20% thing is just for the older drives though, but still doesn't do any harm!

Depends on the hard drive you're cloning from.

SSDs are ADF/4K. If you're cloning up from an old 512byte sector drive then you'll get disk alignment issues and Windows will just go into a reboot cycle.

I cloned my windows from a WD caviar black on to a Samsung 840 pro 120Gb using the Samsung migration software, nice and easy. My pc cold boots fully to windows in about 9 seconds
Just don't tell my wife how much it's cost me to build up so far...+1k ahem...
