Default Car Names and how they get them...

Our car is new (to us) and doesn't have a name yet. If I know anything about cars, though, it'll happen shortly and completely unexpectedly.

So two questions from the newbie kiwi:
1 - Is naming vehicles a common thing over here in the UK?
2 - Anyone got any really great stories about how their car (or their friend's/dad's/mum's/dog's car) got its name?

I learnt to drive partly in a green 206cc. I called her TB2 (as in Thunderbirds), and couldn't help but sing the theme tune each time I put the roof down.
Just passed my test and bought a black 207cc as of yet not christened.
