After a decent 200 mile run to S Wales, went on short drive to supermarket. My engine suddenly went dead. Electrics aok, turned over OK but would not fire. Pushed it to side of road then tried to start again and off it went. Following day half an hour into trip, died again. Called out AA. After half hour tried again. Started OK - cancelled AA. Set off and ten minutes later died again. AA did diagnostic - reported low fuel pressure. Towed me to garage. Tried it at garage - started OK! AA guy suggested fuel pump (unlikely given intermittent nature of fault) or pressure switch or camshaft sensor. Any ideas folks? Thanks in anticipation!

Hi, I have my own post on here with a problem with fuel? Anyway, yours sounds like a mate who had this problem! Check if it dies while ticking over after half hr, if not, is it only when under load IE: driving around? was the diagnostic done with PP2000? My mate had to change his pump as the 3rd piston kept disengaging losing pressure?
I would aim for getting live data from someone to see whats happening with pp2000.....sorry I can't be more help....mine won't even start so I can't nail my own problem ha ha!

There's been a similar case posted on 407owners recently, it was fuel pick up pipe in fuel tank partially blocked. Have you tried pumping the priming bulb on fuel filter when it cuts out to see if it'll restart straight away?

Thanks for all the replies. Sadly key 200 mls away so can't try that. We did try bulb on filter but didn't get it to fire (AA guy squirted fuel into air intake which made it run for a second). Re 3rd piston disengaging could you explain a bit more please (my ignorance!) how this links with fuel pump? I'll see if I can get proper diagnostic done too. Cheers

Also Update your prifile to show where you are in the world as there a members on here with local knowledge possibley local to where you / car are now. Could be a number of things wrong but 1st and formost when was she last serviced Fuel Filter etc. I made a school boy error the other week when servicing the wifes 2.0 tdi Passat. After replacing the fuel filter I discovered that it needed priming and in the absence of a priming bulb etc i had to fill the filter housing with diesel but due to being lazy i used the dirty stuff that I had drained thinking it was running before so it should be fine :nono: Started and run great. Did the shopping etc everything fine, Went to a christening the nest day covered about 150 - 200 miles perfectly then Monday Morning she drove 100 yards up the road stalled and no start  After I took her to work stripped down the filter to discover it was my fault it was clogged up oops So new filter fitted and nice clean fresh diesel in housing started up no more issues so far and it has been over a week now :D

I feel kinda cheeky considering I can't sort my own problems out and here I am offering you advice.
But here goes, my mate had the same problems with his 307 (like Mine) and it was down to the fuel pump, I did not know how this worked until garage explained to him when I took him to collect it. (I never had pp2000 at the time so could not help him out.)

The fuel pump has pistons inside (like the car) to enable building of pressure, but it has a controlled piston number 3, The ECU (BSI) tells the 3rd piston to disengage when pressure is not required for the work of the engine. That's why I asked if happened only under load or did it happen just running on idle on the drive etc?

My mates never cut out when on Idle but did when he drove it, as when under load the 3rd piston in the pump is required more to deliver the fuel at greater pressure to feed the speed...etc

because of the cost of these things he had a garage do the work as he never knew what could be at fault either a fuel pressure sensor (That also could be a problem) or the actual pump itself, turned out it was the pump and through live data the garage was able to find that the Solenoid that controlled the 3rd piston was faulty, I have never checked if that was serviceable on its own but some guys on here might know?

I can only tell you what we were told by the garage, I'm no trained Tech on these cars like a lot of the Members are, so don't take my advice as the gospel....just something that might help you sort of aim for in that area!

good luck.....now to sort mine...ha ha

Colin it's about halfway between services but still a valid point which I'll look at. I'll sort out profile too. Thanks Mooseman - any advice is welcome and this is interesting too whether or not it turns out to be the solution. Good luck with your post.

Solution!

The garage changed the camshaft sensor and that's cured the problem (compliments to AA guy!). As I understand it the sensor controls the diesel injection according to information it sends to the ECU about what point the no 1 piston cam is at. I'm sure if I've got that wrong someone will explain it better! However, that would explain why it looked like a fuel problem. Maybe if the sensor was on its way out it would be affected by temperature changes explaining why it ran for a while then failed then started again.

Just to recap the symptom: engine dies with no warning light indication. Starter turns over but engine won't fire. Leave for short while and engine starts OK. Drives for say 5 minutes then dies again.

Hope this helps anyone with similar problem and thanks again to all who came up with suggestions.

Glad you got it fixed John & Brill that you posted your solution as there is so many threads on here where someone has an issue asks for help gets it sorted then never lets anyone know what happened etc :thumb:

Engine cuts suddenly. Leave for half hour, then off again.

I have this problem too. Had a mechanic with a generic code reader look at it, but no faults show up. He suggested dodgy feedback from EGR valve.
Is there any way to test the camshaft sensor ?
Are there any downloadable programs for a PC which will show detailed info in engine while using a generic interface ? I bought a bluetooth one and was very disappointed by the minimal info that I could see with my android phone. I downloaded Torque Pro, but it was a waste of time.
I am in North County Dublin, if there is anyone who could help.
Thanks
Shane

Glad I found this.
Just had car serviced, 2.0hdi 407SW.
Had the cambelt changed and since then I start it up then after literally 2 seconds, engine dies. Fire it up again and runs as sweet as a nut.
Always does it now when starting up from cold.
As the crankshaft sensor could have been disturbed when cambelt was changed I thought about replacing it. I think I will now as fuel issues have been ruled out.
