Opinions on auto box

Come April, SWMBO's trusty panda diesel will reach 10 years old and we will be looking for another car. Much research has indicated a 2008 as a good choice. We're thinking about an automatic though, and everything I've read from reviewers seems to indicate we should avoid them as they dont shift correctly etc...

Are they just being overly critical? Are the autos ok for normal, sensible driving instead of trying to keep up with porsches on winding roads? I know newer cars have a different box fitted, but with the budget we can afford, we will be looking at 14-16 plate vehicles, so the earlier boxes.

Having stick shift isnt a deal breaker, just looking at options at the moment. Would welcome comments from anyone who actually owns one.

Cheers

I have had and now have auto peugeots, all of which have been the EAT6 . I don't know if that's the same box as in the 2008 but if it is, they're very good indeed!
I'd stay clear of the semi auto as is in the eHDI 508s as they're a nightmare apparently.

I agree the REAL autos are fine and as long as they are driven properly and given an oil change at least once in their life are fine the boxes are bought in and used by many manufacturers

The kid on autos or more accurately called manuals :) on the other hand can be really troublesome these are basically manual boxes with electronic control of the whole system of pressing the clutch and changing the gears they never work very well regardless of what badge is on the car !

My 2 cents after 2k miles of egc box on 3008 ehdi

So far the box has worked as expected my fingers are crossed this will remain the case.

Driving is very simple select “go” and press the gas pedal 1st 2nd and 3rd gear are less smooth than i can do myself but i have been with drivers who would be put to shame 4th 5th 6th once gearbox is warm I’d say darned good. Traveling in town it stays fairly much in 3rd and 4th

When i bought mine if i had decided on manual i would have had about £1.5k more on the bill and probably a 500 mile round trip to buy it so i hope i might retain some of that in case of repairs.

I am fortunate in i have a local engine specialist with a highly rated gearbox agent next door to them if needed. If i was using a main dealer I probably would not have risked buying it

In use if your not acting as if you have a sports car it flows well in traffic but can and will get confussed if you act erratically. The manual option i only use for overtaking and one local steep hill with bizarre camber that most drivers struggle on. So far i have not felt need for sport mode

I accept i might in time regret the semi automatic but for the moment find it relaxing all said though mine is in a 3008 :thumb:
