Glow Plugs

Hello just wondered if changing the glow plugs on a 1.6 hdi is a difficult job as i suspect they have failed. Is there anything I need to move out the way to gain better access to each of them?

Just wondered as I have had the p1351 error code for while now and it won't let me delete it with diagbox. I take it it should clear itself when whatever's wrong with the glow plug system is fixed like the egr i replaced last year. Just want to get this fixed as I don't like a car to have any problems with it.

Most HDI engines have this fault showing its harmless.

I actually think its a fault in the software rather than an actual fault as so many have it :)

As above i would not go changing glowplugs unless you have a DPF as they wont make any difference and can break in the head causing you problems.

Ok cheers I'll just leave them then as the car doesn't have a DPF. I have heard they are quite a pain to get to as they are behind the engine. Last thing I want is them snapping leaving behind part of it in the head.

I'm just guessing, but I think it might be because modern diesels have a fuel heater now to warm up the fuel if it requires it.

Throw in modern refined diesel fuel, and more efficient engines into the mix, and that might be the reason why they're not used unless its really cold (and the diesel is thicker)

I can vouch for all modern Direct Injection Engines not requiring glow plugs as on the in-direct engines they are used to pre-combustion or swirl chambers before the fuel/air mixture enters the pot.

The heat generated by the compression in the Direct Injection units is often enough.

my old Saab had over 200k on an 02 plate, the glow plug light only came on when the ambient outside temp was well below freezing point! Still had the original heater plugs in!
