fuel pump

Hi, 1997 Hungarian registered (not that that makes any difference!) 406 2.1 Estate, has been diagnosed as needing some work on the fuel pump. The symptoms are that on idle, it rocks to and fro with the engine hunting quite badly. I believe the pump is a Lucas Epic. My questions really are rather broad... Is this a common fault, does it usually involve a change of pump, are these pumps commonly available as 2nd hand or recon units?
Many thanks for any responses! :)

Epic pumps were always troublesome on ALL vehicles they were fitted to and there were not a huge amount of 2.1s made so you may struggle to find a good used one.

Having your own reconed may be your only option IF that is indeed what is wrong.

Hi, thanks for the answer. That seems to suggest that although there are many vehicles fitted with this pump, they are not the same; I mean I can't grab one from a Transit, for example. Is that right?
We had the old girl properly diagnosed by Peugeot so I imagine they are right and it is the pump...

Update: it seems that our problem is the wiring to the pump, not the pump itself. Apparently the wires in the loom have lost some of their insulation and this is what's causing the odd symptoms. For the princely sum of 50,000 HUF (around €170) they can sort it out.
So many thanks for the advice. :)
