Default Peugeot Expert no power smoke and rattle

Hi my Peugeot Expert 2.0Hdi 07 plate broke down the other night after working all day. I had driven for about 30 mins and stopped to do something when I got back in the van started fine but when I pulled away it juddered and died (like i was pulling away in the wrong gear). I started it again and it kept doing this. I called the RAC when the bloke arrived the diagnosis equipment said no problem found but when he revved it it said 0% on the EGR valve. I have had someone look at on the drive but he thinks there could be more to it. when it revs there is a loud rattle from the engine and loads of smoke out the exhaust. There is also smoke from the exhaust manifold when the hose is taken off and the van just has no power when revved. I don't want to take it to a garage for them to change the EGR valve and there be more wrong without knowing more first. Also i don't want to pay 80 for it to have to be towed to the garage to find out they can't fix it. If anybody has info or advise it would be great.
Many Thanks
