Default Trickle Charger & ECU Reading

I'm wanting to grab the map file from my soon-to-be gutted and part-harvested 307, I've got KWP2000+ and Galletto, and it's going to be the first time I use either of them.

Whilst the electrics are switched on in the car, I don't want the battery to conk out whilst I'm copying the file from the ECU, so I've bought myself a trickle charger, based on advice I've previously heard. Is it safe to use a charger with the electrics switched on, and without potentially turning components to a crisp?
