Default wrong oil in euro6 engine

My oil level was on minimum so I added a litre of oil yesterday. Ever since I've been getting 'change oil' and now 'check engine' messages. I'm in France and stopped at a Peugeot dealer who checked the system with his computer. All he could see wrong was perhaps a faulty sensor and said it should be OK to continue but to get the van checked when back in the UK.
I then realised that I put in only ordinary oil (marked as suitable for petrol and diesel engines) and then found out I should use special synthetic oil for euro6 engines.

So, what should I do now? The engine is running fine and I've done about 300 miles since adding the oil. Should I just do a complete oil and filter change? Will I have messed up something else?

Thanks
Chris

Hi...i'm suprised the dealer did'nt offer to do an oil/filter change while you were there..but I would at the next available opportunity..you can do an oil change as often as you like..

It was Shell Helix HX7 10W40. Mileage is 45k. There was an oil leak at about 39k and that was fixed (under warranty) so the oil would have been changed then.

Yes, they could have - they were pretty busy though, I was lucky the guy with the computer was available. All their service bays were full and other cars waiting.

I'll see if I can find a place tomorrow that can fit me in - not so easy when I don't know a lot of French!

Thanks.

Its probably the thicker oil upsetting the level sensor they are very fussy it wont do any real harm but if you have only done 6k miles since oil leak was fixed and it needed more i would question if the oil was really topped up after leak was fixed
