Default Lubricating gear cables.

Someone stated they sprayed wd40 and then oil down their gearcables and it made a huge difference. I've taken the shroud off mine and all I see is steel rods attached to the cable ends, but nowhere to spray the oil in. I can't do it from underneath cos I haven't got a pit.
Can it actually be done and if so how?
2004 Boxer 2 litre HDI 5 speed manual.

You need the thinnest runniest oil you can find and just drip it into the cable where the rod slides in and out when you move it it will work its way in might need done a couple of times only fly in the ointment is if the outer cables are cracked the oil can leak out.

OK I can't see where the rod goes in, but I'll check again in the morning and give that a try. Thanks for your help.
