Default Broken bonnet release cable - 1997 306

Please can anyone tell me if there is a 'secret' way to open the bonnet on a 1997 306 diesel estate.

Its my wifes car which has been SORN'd since Christmas due to financial meltdown after losing my job and the battery has gone dead flat.

I came to charge the battery last night to get the car back on the road and the bonnet wont open. I pulled on the handle with ever increasing force and now the handle itself has broken. I tried pulling the end of the cable with Mole Grips but its still not opening.

Is there a trick?

Your help would be very much appreciated - especially if you have actually overcome the problem personally.

Thanks in hopes,
Mick
