Default power loss

hi guys, just wandering if someone out there has had this happen....
I was driving along with no problems then all of a sudden I lost all power, pull over and foot to the floor and its struggling to ide. This is without any warning or any dash lights what so ever. Got towed back home its pretty much not running, when it dies kind of manage to ide it sounds so bad. I'm maybe thinking egr valve or turbo but surely I should have some sort of warning lights come up. Any advice/ help would be gratefully received, thanks in advance.

Timing belt snapped? If you said idling engine then discount this one.

If you suspect turbo, how frequently do you change your oil.
I've heard of someone whose turbo diesel would not start due to blocked turbo oil feed. They went through 2 starter motors before arriving at correct diagnosis of s broken turbo.

Egr - I had s blocked egr. At idle the engine really shakes and vibrates. If it blocks closed I think the exhaust gases are not cooled and can cause overheating problems for the turbo.

I'm probably missing some detail but you get the picture.

Check egr by opening up air ducts? If sludged up you found your culprit, but should not affect starting up?
