Default 806 fuel Gauge stuck on 1/4

Hi all my gauge is showing that there is just over a 1/4 of a tank of diesel left in it. I have noticed that since I fuelled up it hasn't gone down. I use 40 per week but this week it is on 1/4 so I know there is something wrong. I put in 40 today and gauge registered 1/4. Is the sensor on the pump or not and is it the old float type or electronic, can I repair/replace or does the whole pump need changing? Any help appreciated. Thanks.i forgot to mention when I turn the ignition off it goes to zero then once I start the car or turn the key the needle moves to the 1/4 mark, 2001, 110, quicksilver diesel 2.0hdi.

Sounds very much like the sender unit in the tank
