Default Test of water temperature gauge

My son just bought a 407sw with a 1.6 HDi engine.

The water temp gauge does not rise at all. The oil temp gauge shows a normal temp.
Then I expect a faulty gauge or sensor - not the thermostat itself.

How can test the gauge before ordering a new sensor?
I have a number of resistors so I thought I could put a couple of values just for testing but I don't know which range.

Would it be wise just to test with 1Kohm and 100ohm to see what happends, or???

1Kohm and 270ohm resistanses did the job.

Gauge is working.
Need a new sensor...
