Not sure why you would like to blank off the EGR, but that looks like youve got a blown gasket or a crack in the turbo or exhaust manifold since exhaust gases are leaking.

1.6 hdi right? If so it's most likely the turbo to cat clamp or the middle clamp that holds the dpf and cat together that is leaking exhaust gases slightly. You can try undoing the clamps and reseating everything but most of the time you will need a new clamp as they don't make a good seal once loosened and retightened. Quite common, it's the same on ours. New clamps are a few pounds.
Do no be tempted to sort the sealing with exhaust paste or anything.
