Default Recommended Garage in Berks/Oxon/Hants?

Hi all,

I have been here before with the dreaded heater flap problem which was solved beautifully with your collective help, but now our problems are mounting up a bit more and I need some more general advice if that's at all possible.

So we have a 407 SW 1.6 Diesel 57 plate (Feb 2008), and generally it's a very good and reliable car. We have tried before to get a readout with Planet with the help of the lovely people here on the board that offer such service, but somehow either our car didn't want to play ball or other issues prevented us from even getting to a check-up.

Anyway, the problems are as follows:

ESP/APR fault (since Sept 2012)
Risk of particle filer blocking since about Jan 2013
Depollution System Faulty (2 days ago)

The car is bumping about in the morning around 1500 rpm and again around 1800 rpm, which is annoying (until it warms up a bit more) because those are the rpms most used in the 30 zone to school and the 40 zone with cruise control en route. I have found that if I use cruise control even around 30 Miles in 4th gear, my overall consumption is better, so if I shouldn't be using it at such low speed, I would appreciate to know why, genuinely. Otherwise I hope this is ok (it's on country roads with speed limitations).

We also have a driver front suspension bush problem, which was replaced with an after market bush in May, but came out pretty much straight away again. The garage (not Peugeot) told us that since it wasn't supposed to be a replacement part (Peugeot only replaces the whole lower suspension leg/hub with all the bushes in place apparently), it was difficult to secure it. They did their best and it lasted until about 1 month ago, when it slipped out again (well, it feels loose, knocks and shifts, handles badly and pulls to the left when braking and the front driver side tyre is getting pretty bald on the outside rim). Obviously we need to do something, I am pretty unhappy with the state of it, but of course we are looking at LOADS of money if we did simply hand it over to the Peugeot dealer in Reading and asked them to fix everything.

From what I have read, there may be a new diesel filter on the cards, I have no idea if we have an Eolys tank and/or if this is full or empty or even may have anything to do with it, we need the new lower suspension and with the depollution system fault, which we had fixed at the same time we had the heater repaired, I wouldn't even begin to imagine where that came from. Add the suspension problem and I doubt we'd be under the 1000 mark or even more.

So, the long and the short of all of this is simply, does anyone know of a good garage or independent mechanic in the Berks/Oxon/Hants area who would be willing to have a look and a check on all those niggles and come up with an idea of what needs to be done straight away, and what can wait until MOT time? (obviously the tyre would be a big issue... MOT is end of March, and this years' MOT was passed without a single issue... grr). Since obviously the bush replacement didn't quite work out, we are now looking at sourcing a lower suspension leg (under the 250 Peugeot price tag) to replace ours and hopefully a garage that would be willing to put it in for us. Neither myself nor my husband are mechanically inclined, we simply wouldn't quite know what to do..

As I said before, we have tried to get some of the fault codes checked with the people that own Planet in our area, but it didn't quite work out. So, can anybody help with this?

Thanks for looking, and if I posted this in the wrong area, I am sorry, please shift if necessary. Thank you!

Caithlinn

Hello

Blimey, a few things going on there! I'n not an expert but here's my 2 tupense worth:

"ESP/APR fault (since Sept 2012)"------ A local garage should be able to sort. More than likely, a new ABS sensor required. Maybe more than one due to time its been faulty.

"Risk of particle filer blocking since about Jan 2012"---------- If what i've read on internet is right, you were (maybe) running low on eloys fluid. As it was almost 2 years ago you got message it may have run out now?Again, a garage job to check if it needs refilling.

"Depollution System Faulty (2 days ago)" ---------- If the eloys fluid did run out then maybe its contributed to a blocked DPF? Again, only what ive read on internet so far.

"We also have a driver front suspension bush problem" --------- are you able to source the whole arm of the internet? A lot of the time, it can be cheaper to replce the whole arm rather than the bush. Labour vs part cost when changing bush.

The ESP/ ABS and control arm/ suspension are just wear and tear items. Any local reputable garage should be able to change ok. I couldn't give a price on that though.
The eloys/ DPF issue i'm still learning about (new to diesels). I'm hoping someone else can give better advice.

But your car is not that old really. to bring back to life is much much cheaper than buying another car (with unknown faults). One thing to remember for future is don't ignore topping eloys fluid, and change the oil regular with low SAPS oil. Very important for DPF.

Sorry that above probably doesn't help you much at the moment! I used a garage in Portsmouth, Hants, that is a French car specialist for an ABS sensor replacement - Drive-in-automotive. Seemed to have good reviews on internet but i think that may be to far for you to travel.

Cherwell Vehicle Services in Oxfordshire come up on internet search? I've never used them so can't say what they are like.

Sorry i can't help more.

Hi Savs,

whoops, that should have been Jan 2013 for the risk of diesel particulate filter blocking, so it's coming up to one year.. sorry for the mistake

But thanks for all the input, I will have another think about our local garage then. They don't have Planet, though, and it might help to know what the faults actually are.

Thanks again!

Haha! No worries. Did think that was a long time!

I do agree that using Planet might be better for a good diag reading. I do know dealership rates are high!! Bit of a rock and a hard place there.

Hope it works out though. Sorry I couldn't help much :-)
