Sorry if I sound thtupid.

If I had PP installed on a laptop, what would I need to connect it to my car? I'm quite IT savvy but not with cars. Link below - would this do? Feel free to shoot me down

First one will probably give generic codes without useful descriptions and won't be able to access things like ABS, Airbags etc.

The second one will give you descriptions and allow you to access ABS, Airbags etc. It will also allow you to read and capture live data if required. You can clear fault codes and turn off the EML but the faults will come back if you haven't repaired the faults.

The diagnostics equipment from ebay can vary in quality and possibly not work on some cars. Generally, the software needs Windows XP installed on the laptop to run tho some people run the software in a virtual machine on windows 7. Others have reported they run the software from within the windows 7 environment but these are few and far between.

The diagnostics software comes in two flavours with various versions. The software is either Peugeot Planet - PP2000 or Diagbox. My experience is that older cars with Van/Can systems require PP2000 which can also be used with later cars with a full can bus but the latest cars require Diagbox. If you also want to use the equipment on Citroen cars then you will need Diagbox.

Haha, trust Peugeot to be different and use an interface of expensive complexity while marrying it to software that will only run on old Windows XP - a soon to be obsolete OS!! Diagbox it is then - still a cost-saving alternative to the dealer rip-off. I will invest at some point.

Many Thanks

Not really, PP2000 has been around for a long time when XP was the latest OS. Diagbox is the more recent software. A lot of the troubles related to the need to use XP are down to users preferring or even requiring the use of PP2000 and the fact that the software isn't legitimate. The versions of the hardware available are usually clones which are of varying quality and as such have varying prices. Some copies have sections of the circuitry missing so limiting the functionality of the unit. Some have older firmware and this old firmware may not work with the Windows 7 driver. The dealers won't have these issues as they use the genuine hardware & software and also have the ability to udate the firmware. The saying "You get what you pay for" is very relevant with this equipment and the genuine items as used by the dealers are many times more expensive than the copies available on ebay.

As for XP being a soon to be obsolete OS, that isn't strictly a true statement. I accept that Microsoft have announce that they are phasing out support for the OS but there are many businesses and home users out there that are still using the OS and have no intention of changing for quite some time. It will only become obsolete in the true sense of the word once it stops being used by a large number of computer users.

Whichever way you go, as long as the hardware & software choice you make works with your car, the cost is quite expensive initially but over time, the cost will be repaid over again by not having to pay he dealers charges for a diagnostic or even paying other garages to use less effective and less informative generic devices and as happens to many people, changing unnecessary parts trying to repair faults.

If Peugeot ran a diagnostic then they will have used the correct diagnostic equipment so the one in the ebay sale will only tell you the same as the Peugeot diagnostic.

How much did you pay?

I can do you a good copy for the price of postage and media if you need one.

Or Send me a USB memory stick and an SAE.

Best installation instructions are here:
