Default How low have you had your fuel?

After a drive out today I've just got in (1am)& found out my visa debit card doesn't work at the pumps.

My range has gone from "19" straight to "----" and I've been driving like this for the last 5 miles.
Anyone actually ran out of fuel or driven with a range this low before?

I usually get '---' when the range drops below 90 and this normally happens just after the guage gets into the red zone. If this happens on the motorway then I know I have about safe 50 miles (barringdelays) left in the tank but on normal roads I would guess that I'd be lucky to get another 30 miles.

My trip computer is not very accurate regarding fuel consumption, regularly telling me I'm averaging 68 MPG when in reality it is more like 56 MPG so I take the range calculation with a pinch of salt.

Only ran out of Diesel once not in a Pug in a company ford escort back in the 90's. What a bloody nightmare never again had to walk in the cold sleety snow to the nearest garage about 2 miles away walk back then put the damn stuff in and start pumping it with the pump. returned home changed out of my suit into another went to the office for other engineers to have a laugh . One had seen my car stopped not seen me and drove off

Never let it go too low now always worry about picking crap of the bottom of the tank as well

No more than 30 miles after the light has come on, not worth the risk.

Not suggesting you try this but....

Where I work we do loads of bodywork on used cars for local dealers - dealers are notorious for having as little fuel in cars as they can get away with (hell I think they drain them sometime lol) and I've regularly driven way WAY past the range - 0 mark. It isn't always the best idea - in a rover 75, I actually ran out within about 30 seconds of it saying 0, in an audi A6, it said zero when we picked it up in Newcastle, we drove to the bodyshop (18 miles away) and back without putting any in and had no problems.

On another note, got in an Astra the other day, range of 33 miles. Drove home (had to pick up my phone) - 4 miles, and got home with 14 miles left on the range. Restarted the car after grabbing my phone and it said 36 - then drove the car to Durham (about 12 miles) and arrived with 48 left on the range!

I can tell you that a 1.9 diesel Partner van (well ours anyway) was good for about 70 miles once the light came on - no range computer. My 306, again a 1.9 diesel went well over 50 after the light came on once (I honestly just kept forgetting to put any in - lots of short journeys) but with my current 407, 22 miles left is as low as I've let it get so far.

I remember Jeremy Clarkson getting (I think) nearly 100 miles out of an Audi A8 after it went to 0 miles on the clock when he tried (and succeeded) in getting from London - Scotland and back on a tank (cant remember which bit of scotland tho).

Point is, over time, you'll come to realise that the ranges on modern cars, generally, speaking, are total and utter b******** - don't rely on them absolutely.
