some info seems to be missing - like which car, which stereo system - factory system or 3rd party replacement.

Give us something to go on.

jd2000,

Any CD/DVD reader that sits and almost "ticks" away is usually pointing to a laser issue - the "tick" is the laser head trying to read the disk, trying to focus and failing, and then trying again. It will try this several times before it gives up and then comes up with "no disk" as it then believes that, since it cant read anything, there cant be a valid disk inserted.

If you have tried a cleaning disk a couple of times (if applicable with some isopropol alcohol if it is required) and it still fails, then you are usually looking at a replacement drive unit, unless there are any specialist places out there that will replace the laser head...

Paul
