Default headlamp dash levelling switch

headlamp levelling switch 407 hdi (standard halogen lights) stopped working.

when headlights are switched , the switch background light illuminates for a split second then goes out.

Tried two second hand switches same thing (possibly they were duff)

3 wires to the switch are green, white and purple.

managed to get the lights to lowest level by connecting purple and white wire.
A bit hit or miss as sometimes it did not want to move when connecting the wires (purple and white)

So I can raise and lower headlights by mucking about with the three wires so i'm assuming from this that it's not the motor adjusters in the headlight.

How do I test the rotary dial switch (3 pin connector) to see if the switch is the culprit
