Default Grinding noise when shifting to Drive

This has happened twice now where, when I start the engine and shift from P to D, there is a strange grinding noise and the screen just shows a flickering "P", after which it gives a warning to shift back to Park.

I've noticed that when this happens, the climate control fans don't come on either (and the window switches also don't work). It somehow seems connected in a strange way. For instance, if I start the car and the climate fans start blowing, then you pretty much know it'll shift into D without issues.

Any idea what would cause this? The grinding noise points me towards the transmission, but I don't see why that would in any way affect the aircon/fans & window switches (as they would work in Park as well).

Car's been at the mechanics for 2 days now - they can't find anything wrong. ATF is fine, and no error codes either. They're considering referring me to a transmission specialist to see if they can find anything. Problem is, I don't know what to tell them to look for, as it doesn't happen often enough to reproduce the problem easily.
