Default gearshift broken, how to remove/replace?

Hello all, been trawling the net and the forums, can anyone tell me how to undo the gear control cables on the gearbox and remove the box with the shifter mechanism from the car so I can gain access to the mechanism itself and the cable connection inside the "box" the gear stick is connected to..?

The car is a 2006 407 1.6HDi 5 speed manual box.

I can only move the stick from side to side, not select any gears..
When I move the levers the cables are connected to on the gearbox while the engine is not running it is possible to select a gear and then turn the engine on and make the car move on the clutch, so it looks to me as a fault in the cable connections or a faulty shifter in the car..

Can anyone tell me how to dismantle the shifter and cables without breaking things..?

Thanks in advance, any pointers are highly appreciated!
Jakob

I can't help with the cables, Jakob, but it could possibly be the clutch. It sounds like your clutch isn't disengaging going by the description you gave. Can you stop the car with the engine running, in gear, or does it stall? Sterion75

Try selecting first and then starting the car with the clutch pressed. If you can't, or the car moves when the starter engages (make sure you have space in front of the car!), Sterion75 is right about the clutch being the problem.

Hey guys, thanks for chiming in. When the engine is stopped, i can select a gear directly on the box, the stick inside the car does not follow the cable when i move the arm on the gearbox.

I can then depreds the clutch pedal, release the clutch slowly and make the car move on the clutch. Sounds to me like the problem is on the gearshift or (hopefully not) the gearbox, dont you think that is the case..?

To be clear, when i have a gear selected I can start the engine and make the car move on the clutch, normal behavior.

Apollogies for type-o's, writing on a dodgy phone at the moment.. 😉

Think the clutch is dragging when the pedal is depressed? If you can change gear normally on the move this would confirm it.
You can release the cables at the gearbox by driving the galvanised metal clip numbered 3 on the diagram on an earlier post downwards on its lip using a small screwdriver and hammer. Not easy to spot it is a removable as it blends into the alloy control plate bolted to the top of the gearbox. This releases the outer cable, the inner cable just squeeze the black button and it detaches.
