My 1st gear on my 206 was getting awkward.

Gave it a gear oil change and that did help.

Take a look at the shaft, that is below the gear cable selector bracket on the gearbox. Have an assistant go through all the gears until you figure out the longest throw on the shaft between two gears, it could be 1st and 3rd, can't remember for sure. Clean the shaft with brake cleaner or wd40. Apply loads of silicone grease to the shaft and continue to change gears between the longest and shortest throw of the shaft a dozen or more times. Continue greasing and shifting until it feels smooth. This may or may not solve the problem, but is a cheap starting point. I had a similar problem on my 806 just before Christmas and this procedure cured it, despite a Peugeot main dealer wanting to change the gear selector cables for silly money.
