Default Intermittent non start

My wife`s mint 1999 16v GLXauto (RFV) is giving me a hard time,(so`s my wife!)
As always runs as sweet as a nut,but once and a while will not start.
Last week used every day, back and forth, stop start etc starts on the button.
Stopped for petrol last night, went to leave the garage, would not start, turns over fast, you could keep the starter going till the battery goes flat, not a hint of a start.
"play" with the key, (Blip works) lock and unlock the doors a few times. Then for no reason it will start instantly and then starts many times after.
As you would expect "no codes present" on my Sun/SnapOn tool and the same on a Peugeot Specialist friend`s up to date tool.

One for you reliable406?? I`m thinking of the multi function relay? That huge relay inside the ECU box. Any more ideas ?

Could it be the transponder ring starting to play up?

next time it does it see if leaving the key in the ignition and opening the door makes the car beep if not then you have a problem with the car seeing the key
