Default fuel tank problem

hi all,just got a 406 20 hdi estate on a 53,it's a great car but it had a smell of diesel which i found out to be the threds on the fuel tank where the sender unit fits into,try as i will the large screw on plastic nut will not go on,so i am going to change the fuel tank,,,what i am wanting to know is will a saloon fuel tank of the same age fit,,,also has anybody else had the same problem ,if so was there a easy fix,,,,thanks in advance ray

They are a !!!**** to start.If its been forced more than likely the thread in the cap is damaged.Before you go to all that trouble try a new cap and rubber seal and carefully clean the tank threads.Get someone to hold the tank unit down against the rubber seal and you patiently !!?? screw it down.
Sometimes it start 1st go or you try and try again.

hi mate thanks for reply,we took the tank out and used a heat gun to soften the plastic threds on the tank,as it was a bit wonky ,,put the sender unit back in then screwed the cap back on,,,,seem ok for now anyway....
