Default Coolent level

I have Peugeot 406 20 HDI 2003 Executive and when i start the car and i moves like 2 km a warning light came on saying coolant engine temperature is too high for 10 sec and then it turns off and the temperature stays normal. Then i check coolant level in the morning when the engine is cold to see the level of it and i think it was low. I left my coolant tank open and i left my 406 idle and the coolant level increases a bit. Whats the problem?

Thanks,
Matthew

I don't know why your light is coming on, although it could just need bleeding. As to the level rising, this is normal as the coolant expands as it gets hot. It is the expansion being 'trapped' by the header tank/radiator cap that pressurizes the system allowing a higher temperature to be reached before the coolant boils. (Although it should never get that hot.) If I remember rightly, the boiling point is raised by one degree C for every pound pressure exerted.
