Angry 406 hdi hose problem

Hi, guys.
I have a 2l 406 hdi estate with 215,000 miles.I noticed one day it had dumped
about 1/2 a litre of oil on the drive.Lifting the bonnet I saw a 3" rubber hose
come adrift from a metal pipe which runs under the engine. The other end of the
hose disappears thro the front panel,to the left side of the two radiators. No more oil is coming out and the oil light on the dash goes out after start up.
I have reconnected the hose and secured with a new jubilee clip.
Has anyone any idea what its purpose is?
Regards, Peter.
