Default 406 HDi Automatic

Hi

Never owned a Peugeot before so don't know what to expect from the automatic box., or the car for that matter. I recently test drove a 2003 HDi 110 auto estate with comprehensive independent service history. It's clearly been looked after and is clean and tidy throughout. It seems to be a bit of sluggish drive though and although it changes through the gears cleanly and smoothly, it does not appear to kick-down from 4th to 3rd. If I manually down shift, it revs at 4k but not beyond and when I manually up-shift it takes a few seconds before it goes back into 4th. There are no diagnostic lights on the dash and the sport and winter modes seem to activate when pressed and are lit on the dash to confirm. There is nothing in the service history to show any gearbox work or fluid changes. The car has done 113000 miles and aside from the gearbox anomaly appears to be a sweet drive...just a bit slow. Are these gearbox symptoms a likely need of new solenoids or is this just how the automatics are. Is it possible that a software upgrade and resetting of adaptive driving might help? Any thoughts or advice welcome.

Sorry I can't help, except to say that mine is one year older than yours in what sounds to be the same condition, and my autobox is doing exactly the same thing.

I haven't driven an auto for more than a decade and the last one was a Volvo, so don't really know what to expect.

Anyone who can weigh in on this would be very welcome!

Hi, welcome to the club

Sorry I can't help much either, but on the other 406 forums it seems the rule of thumb is to change the gearbox oil if you have problems, and see if it helps.

The correct oil type is necessary, and you would need 4.5litres.

If you can get the car diagnosed with PP2000 ( there is a map here of members that have it, but you need to do 20 posts before you can contact them ) then maybe this will point you in the right direction...

Indeed the auto is rather exotic.

AFAIK: Peugeot say it's sealed for life and this is a lie. Anecdotal evidence suggests that boxes that have oil changes last longer and behave better.

The auto in the 110 has a bad reputation for both poor performance and poor reliability -- although the reliability may be largely down to the oil change thing. The auto they used on the V6 petrol (A ZF box I believe) is said to be much better.

You can't be in rush in a HDi 110 -- especially an auto. Turbo is useful from 1800rpm and they're out of puff at 3000 -- typical diesel narrow torque band.

My wife has driven 406 autos for years without any problems from the auto box,at the moment she has a 2000 petrol.
I know these are supposed to be sealed boxes but it is possible to change the oil.I would strongly recommend this to be carried out by an independent Peugeot Specialist who has plenty of experience with these boxes.Correct oil and an ultra clean method of refilling is essential. It would also be a good idea to run a check on the gearbox ECU.It may need a systems download (I think its called that?).I had this done years ago and it improved the way the box operated.
As said an expert who knows these models will soon tell you your car is OK,or not.

Agree with this and, indeed, followed the same advice given me on the 406oc forum by rwb and other kind members. I currently drive the 2.0 HDi 110 and can confirm that the ATF change made a huge difference. As was advised to me, it is vital to use the correct fluid. I followed the recommendation to use Mobil ATF LT71141 and found it at a good price at Opie Oils (look for their 10% discount voucher also before shopping there) As I remember, 5L - enough for a complete change, was around £45ish.
I also agree with comments about not being able to rush in the 110 Auto. I found it a totally different creature after years of driving a 2.0 16v petrol manual but, once adapting to it have found it a good car. Great cruiser in the 40 - 70+mph range and the auto is a huge bonus in heavy traffic. Just no oomph in the initial acceleration. It grows on you though I found.
Check out the 'Tatswitch' - genius mod that completely transforms the use of the autobox.
