Default New 308 owner...1 rather large issue so far!

Hi all,

So I'm the proud owner of a 66 plate 308 1.2 Puretech Active. I have to say, I'm really loving the car. Comfy, drives well, economic but with a burst of power when needed. Looks good, plenty of boot space. Quite a change from my diesel Alfa Romeo previously.

Well....I was really loving the car until....

2 days ago whilst driving, the engine warning light came on and the diagnostic said engine fault, take to a dealer. Took it back to Robins and Day whom I purchased it off 17 days ago today expecting something relatively small. Sods law, the light/message was now off when I dropped it off!

Get a call late in the afternoon. Reading very low pressure in all the cylinders. You need a new engine!

Came as quite a shock! Obviously all covered under warranty as it's still in it's 3 years manufacturers period (plus I've got the extended extra year as well) but still.....I wasn't expecting a 2.5 year old car to need a new engine. It's done higher than average miles for the age coming in at 45k but it's been fully serviced by the dealer at the correct intervals.

Am I just a one off? Or are there any more well known issues I can expect moving forward? I have to say, when I was doing my research there wasn't anything that I came across that stood out as a major gripe with these models/engines.

There have been a few reports of engine issues resulting in new engines seems some were built poorly.

At least the dealer is not feeding you the usual rubbish of its all your fault !

Well considering this engine won 4 euro (Engine Of The Year) awards in as many years i'm as shocked as you worring as i have the same engine on 26k miles now,not heard of any major issues with the puretech's to date,did it still drive ok when returning to dealer?,low pressure on all cylinders could be just a head gasket failure,any signs or history of overheating?

Its not head gasket failure its either low oil pressure causing bore wear or my guess is the wet belt jumping resulting in timing issues.

All the ones i have read of were still running but a bit rough there was 1 on here where it failed completely and it was down to the wet belt.

I predict this will be a common issue in years to come.

Yes that sounds about right i have heard of the belt crumbling and blocking oilways generally at a higher mileage tho',i believe the belts were upgraded from around mid 2017,i just missed out car registered Feb 17 looks like a big job sooner than i expected,this should be at least on a TSB list,will ask dealer next visit.

I rebuild ford 1.8 TDCI engines with wet belts regularly and its irrelevant what mileage they have done i have seen them failed at 40k miles wet belts are a stupid idea i convert all the ones i repair back to the older chain system they used to use !

Its just rubbish to think the belts have been made better after 2017 if they were able to be made better they would have been better to start with.

Bit like the chains on the prince engines they have been under engineered and if looked after properly they last better but they still fail regardless manufacturers are simply doing too much cost cutting.
