Default Issues with 308 just bought

We bought an 2014 peugeot 308 from a private trader a few days ago and since then I think I have uncovered some worrying things about the car.

Before we bought it we performed some checks to see if it was stolen, written off etc and everything came back clean. The sat nav didn't work but we weren't bothered as we prefer google maps. When we turned it on again there was a warning light for the seat belt pre-tensioner/ airbag and the passenger airbag was off.

I bought the lexia3 and have just run some diagnostics on it and basically I think the car has been in some sort of accident. There are a number of faults and when I dug into the information it seems like the front airbags were deployed at some point.

There are not visible signs of a crash on the car so I assume its just been repaired.

Is there anything I can do about this? I assume the first step is to talk to the seller. Hes a trader and owned the car for about 2 weeks before we bought it so I don't know if he necessarily knew about the issues.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

If it was me, in the first instance I would read the below couple of links (plus do further research) to fully understand your rights. I'd then make my mind up what I want. Could be anything from a full refund to just a detailed independent check of the car to make sure it is safe and for peace of mind. I'd then go and speak to the dealer and depending on the response possibly follow this up with a letter so I had proof of the conversation.

Hope it works out for you.

Cheers burgerbob.

I think the main issue is the airbag / seat belt pretensioner. Looks like the airbag module needs resetting / replacing.

Is there any issue in not getting this done from a safety perspective? Its an MOT fail I assume.

On a slightly unrelated note, is there a service manual for the new style 308. The haynes one is for the older model.

This may or may not be your problem but this fault can be caused by the connectors under the front seats not making proper contact due to the seats having been moved back and forth over the years, it may be worth disconnecting them and reconnecting just to see if it makes any difference.

I did have a fiddle with the cables under both of the front seats but it doesn't seem to have done anythinng.

There are error codes in the diagbox software but they can't be cleared the normal way.

Seatbelt and airbag warnings would be automatic MOT failure. They could also mean your demise should you be unfortunately involved in an accident.

Go back to the seller. No matter if he knew or not ( and he will always deny knowledge) you have rights under the "supply of goods and services regulations 2002" which clearly state that any fault appearing within 6 months are deemed to have been there at the point of sale. It's up to the seller to prove otherwise. There are later laws which give more protection.
Contact Trading Standards if you can.

But most of all, don't ignore it.

Default just in case

get a second opinion from another diagnostic specialist

It is possible to have the deployment code active if the battery has been boost charged in situ from virtually flat and other codes also show if its been in an accident.

get it checked before gloom and doom

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll take it to a specialist to have a look.

What am I looking for in a diagnostics specialist. I assume my local garage is not a good bet?

I want to learn a bit more about this car myself so I can do things like oil changes etc myself to save a bit of money but I'm struggling to find any sort of manual for the 2014+ models of the 308. Does it even exist?

Maybe some Youtube videos might help if you cannot find the manual.

So far, that's the only source of information I have found - apart from here of course.
