Default Front hub replacement - easy?

well, i needed some new tyres yesterday and the locking wheel nuts snapped off

then one of the threads snapped off while trying to remove the remaining stud.

basically im left with a bit of thread in one of the hub holes, tried drilling and easy out etc and its just a mess now - hub needs replacing to be honest.

so Hub replacement DIY or garage? not sure if i can just unbolt the hub from the back, whack it off and replace with a new one inc bearing or weather is a suspension arm and whole knuckle replacement job, if its the latter i think garage

any experience appreciated as google is just full of BS and adverts these days.

Been a few years since I last did this on either my old C5 or Xsara but, from memory, it's:

1) Jack up the corner, place axle stand underneath and take wheel off.
2) With someone inside the car pressing on the footbrake slacken big nut (35mm socket I think) but don't remove. There will be a split pin or some other device to lock the nut that will have to be removed. Also remove disc to hub screw.
3) Remove brake caliper and pads. This may be a two part operation. Tie caliper up out of the way securely.
4) Remove disc.
5) Screw nut out to protect the threads on the end of the drive shaft and then tap face of nut to separate the hub from the drive shaft. This has always worked for me in the past but if it's really tight you may have to use a puller of some type.

Biggest difficulty will be cracking the big nut off. It's effing tight and I use a big breaker bar with a four foot length of gas pipe slid over the handle to give greater force to undo it.

And that should be it. Reassembly should just be the reverse process. If you're fitting a S/H hub make sure that the mating surface isn't rusty, a brush with a wire brush should suffice.

That's how I would approach it. There's always a possibility that the design has changed over the years and I would just have to deal with any difference as it arose.

You missed out the bit about pulling the hub off the hub carrier (Service box calls it the swivel pin) Need a largish puller.

I undid the centre drive shaft nut by inserting two wheel bolts and putting a steel tube between them with the end on the ground. This prevented the hub from turning, so could do it single handed.

Oh, and watch out for the ABS bits.

Did say it had been a while! Even a dainty wife can apply enough force with the foot pedal while the servo still has vacuum in store. Yes, be careful with the ABS bits but I think they stay on the upright (hub carrier).
