Default Air Conditioning Does Not Get Cold

Hello Peugeot people.

My car is Peugeot 308 2014 model.

A few days ago I notice that the air conditioner does not blow cold air. It does, but only when it's cold outside. That means, it just turns the air from the outside to the inside.

I went to the dealer and he said it might be that I just need to recharge the air conditioner. He offered to recharge it for $60. Is that a reasonable price? However, we are not sure if that is the real problem.

What could be the real problem?

What country?

If $60 is high then try an air conditioning specialist. It's no use recharging the system if there's a leak somewhere and you really need to get it pressure tested.

My local dealership is charging me 199 for a gas recharge next week. I also have a 2014 308 but mine has the "NEW" gas system. Tried another garage which quoted 99 but then they discovered the "dealership only" gas fittings. I would double check that offer of $60 before proceeding.

Its R1234 YF gas in the 308 T9.

It's a lot more environmentally friendly then the previous R134 gas.

There are various reasons why this new gas is so expensive but we wont go in to them here.

As for the " dealership only " fittings, there is no such thing, there just standard R 1234 YF fittings as found on every car that uses this type gas.

The fittings are different to R134 gassed cars to stop people mixing the refrigerant gases up.

I hope there is no leak anywhere. But, if the freon is gone I am afraid that there might be a leak. Hope there not. I am in Bulgaria and that is why they offer it for much cheaper. So, I will assume this is a very good price to fix it.

Don't waste your money just recharging. AC system is closed system, if the gas is missing, then there is a leak. Radiator is known problem with this car, so check it out.

Thanks for your advice. I would consult with them to see if there is leaking somewhere. Will mention the radiator specifically. There should be leaking somewhere, because there are 15 year old cars with no lack of freon in the A/C.

Actually, it turned out that I also have the "NEW" gas system and they said that it will cost around $300 because of the new freon. Have you tried to fill it yourself? And if yes, what type of freon did you buy and from where? I will probably go to the dealership, but I am just curious of your case.

Few people used old gas in my country, apparently it should be fine. Maybe you should check if anyone does it in your country. Also, I would not go to the dealer, that's the most expensive option.

As Mara- says, radiator is a known point of failure.
I had the same on my 2011 308. Called an AirCon specialist who came out to the house. Before he even opened the bonnet (hood) he said it would likely need a new radiator as leaves and other debris gets trapped on the fins behind the fan which corrodes the core. Sure enough, there was a patch of debris and when he pressure checked it there was bubbling on the radiator where the debris had collected. A new radiator, vacuum check, regas and all was as it should be
