Default Thermostat replacement

Hi can anyone help? I have a 308 sport 1.6 16v petrol. I had a slight misfire on cylinder 1 and open circuit on engine temp control. Took it to a garage and they said that if I changed the thermostat it would cure the problem. I went online and input my car details and shortly after I received the part. I then fitted the part which was slightly different, it has an extra port which I have blanked off. But now I have a warning saying engine temp too high and the fan running even though the engine is not overheating. Not sure where to go now as the cost of repair would be more than the cars value so was considering fixing myself. Any help or previous experience of this fault would be most appreciated.
