Question New thermostat different to original

Hi all, I am new to this forum and also the new owner of a 58 reg Peugeot 308 1.6 sport. I noticed that the temperature gauge hardly moved off the cold end so decided to change thermostat which turned out to require the whole housing. After removing old housing I noticed that an electrical connector that is in the 12 O'clock position on old housing is at the 9 O'clock position on the new (First Line)housing. unfortunately the lead that plugs in to this connector is to short to reach the new 9 O'clock position.

Can I cut the wires and extend them? OR
Have I been given the wrong part, selected by my registration number at auto parts store and need to have it changed.

Also the pipe with the O ring had a spring clip, is it imperative this is fitted.

Thank you in advance for any knowledge/advise regarding above

Kind regards
Harry

If you can post your vin number you could get the precise part number from service box for your car and then make a image comparison between the parts to make sure its the right one you have or not. if its not you could return it and get the correct one, this would be best rather than modifying what you have although it could probably be done. Any clips should always be replaced as was.
