Angry 308 - 1.6 HDi engine woes

Hi peeps.

Wondering if anyone can assist with the problems I am having.

Start was about 3 weeks ago, when I suddenly got the "risk of particle filter blocking" and associated warning triangle appear on the dash. I took the car for a "spirited" run late at night, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

The car then visited a DPF specialist in Manchester about 10 days ago, after the diagnostic machine I have said the filter was 62% blocked. The "specialist" did a DPF clean, and forced a re-gen. He also fitted a new pressure sensor. He commented that there were error codes coming up for the pre-heat system, and suggested I try a replacement pre-heat relay. His main suggestion though, was that I have the DPF removed and the ECU remapped - great advice from somebody supposed to be committed to properly resolving DPF problems!!!!

Fast forward to the early hours of yesterday morning, on the motorway on my way home from work. The low fuel warning sounded, with the display showing around 68 miles left in the tank, as it usually does. A few seconds later the car came up with a new message of "Anti Pollution System Faulty". A few seconds later, the engine just stalled - at 70 mph. I coasted onto the hard shoulder and after a few seconds cranking, managed to get the engine going again. 400 yards later, same thing again. Got the car going a second time, and made it a further 3-4 miles, before again the engine stalled at around 50 mph. This time it would not restart and had to be recovered home.

Having left the battery on charge overnight last night, (the tow truck left the lights and hazards on for the journey home!), I stuck a gallon of diesel in the tank this morning (just in case!!), and tried starting it. Even with easy-start, there was just no effort whatsoever to start. The engine is turning over fine, just not attempting to "light up". There are no fuel leaks under the car, and no smell of fuel around the engine bay. There is nothing obvious being expelled from the exhaust when trying to start it.

Having done a fault read this morning, the following DTC's are stored:

1). Differential exhaust pressure signal short circuit to positive

2). Injection ECU ECU internal fault

3). Injection ECU ECU internal fault (yes - shown twice separately in the fault list).

4). Supply relay control part open circuit or short circuit to positive or short circuit to earth.

5). Flowmeter signal supply voltage too low.

6). EGR valve learning

7). Pre/ post heating relay circuit relay controlled and spark plugs not supplied.

Can anyone assist with where to turn to make some headway with the car and get it running? I realise that number 7 probably relates to the original fault of the dpf filter, but I need to fathom out how to get the car running based on what is above????

Can anyone help me out here?

Injection ecu internal fault is the only 1 that could stop it running check for water damage on the ecu pins.

If the battery went flat you may have lost your keycodes do the beep test.

Thanks for that, Reliable 406! I take it you mean checking the dash beeps with the key in the ignition and the door open?

Yes thats the beep test

If thats ok then you can proceed to checking for water ingress on wiring if it does NOT beep you need to sort that issue first

Does the ignition need to be on or off after trying to start the car and opening the door? If off, but with the key in the barrel, then it failed

Problem is, can't start the car to get it anywhere to be fixed, and nobody local to me (South Manchester) with PP to try recoding it. What a pathetic system of Peugeots' - at least with my X Trail you can recode the keys to the car yourself.

Can anyone assist with where to obtain PP and a (Lexia3?) cable so I can try myself?

In addition, before the battery went flat, the car was originally refusing to start - so not sure which part of the problem is causing this now?????

Did you check the ecu pins take them off and put them back on

Sounds like itís not talking correctly

Check ALL the fuses and if it still does not beep then you need the keys recoded mobile locksmiths can do it too it will NOT start unless key is coded assuming it is indeed lost this can be checked on a proper diagnostic machine not a code reader.

Bit of a further info on the fault - and a question!

Even though I have fully charged the battery, the vehicle is constantly showing "Economy Mode Active" on the MFD when I put the ignition on, every time. Could THIS be stopping it starting?

Secondly, where abouts is the injection ECU located?

Sorry for the delay in continuing the thread, but I've been on holiday!

The economy wonít go off until the cars started and run for a bit. Makes no bearing on the issue whatsoever

Injection ecu is just the main ecu I believe donít think they have a separato one

Yes, you can't cancel the "economy mode" without starting the engine. But as you can't start the engine.......

When you say it won't start, what actually happens? Does the engine spin, but no more or does nothing happen when you turn the key?

What fault codes are now listed?
