Default pipe misseing

can any one say what this pipe dose as it is miss from my engine and what it is for thanks

Outside air intake pipe. It conducts outside air to the air filter assembly.
It's designed to allow better flow and supply of colder air from outside.
Without it you getting "stale" and warmer air from the engine bay with slight loss of performance, but it wont hurt the engine (provided air filter is ok).

The part is about 50 with dealer, maybe slightly cheaper on ebay.

can i just rig up a home made one with the filter at the where it gos into the box at the front

Your car so you can do what you want. After all it is only a duct but needs to be big enough so it does not choke the engine.
