If the temp is above about 5 deg yes. They are not needed for starting but do come on once started sometimes to help clean up emissions

If it were cold enough the glow plug light would illuminate when you first switch the ign on. When it goes off you can then go to start position. That is normal operation of a glow plug system. If yours is coming on as you start it then there is a fault. Especially at this time of the year here in UK. Are you in a cold climate i.e below -3c? Now my 1.4HDi has a Siemens fuel system and the glow plugs on that, if u/s, puts it in Limp mode. Some models of 307 use the plugs on regen and so they need them working. What fuel system has your engine got?

Starter or bad injector leaking fuel into cylinders its not cold enough for glowplugs to even work they only work when its cold IE winter and even then they are not needed.
