Default Making gearstick a little smoother?

Is it at all possible to make the gear shifts on this clunky mechanism a bit smoother? Are there mechanisms/cables to grease? Do they dry out?

Ours is pretty awful in 1st/2nd and 5th.

Or are they all like this by design and cannot be improved?

Sounds like the lateral cable may be degrading but unless you disconnect it from the gearbox you won't know if it's the cable or gearbox/gear lever.
There's little way to lube them without removing but you can grease the ends.
Try it disconnected but without any load it may not yell you much

Lift the gaiter and spray the ball of the gearstick with white grease, makes a world of difference.

Thanks guys.
I'll try the grease first.
