Default Interior Light Puzzle

Could someone enlighten me, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Interior lights in front and back turn on and off OK when I press the button.

I open the doors. Nothing.

I open the doors, turn on the interior light. When I close the doors the light goes off as it should.

I open the doors again. Nothing.

It didn't bother me so much until the clocks changed!
