Default Engine Noise

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone can help me. My 307 2.0 110 diesel has started making a loud noise.
It kinda sounds like a pneumatic drill. It sounds like it is coming from the top of the engine. I'm not suffering from any kind of power loss.
Was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what is causing it?
Thanks

Have you recently filled up at a different station?

Mine sounds like a hammer hitting an anvil - that's why they fit an acoustic cover.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I have recently been using a different station lately. Why would that make a difference?

Possibly - the clacking sound you hear from a diesel engine is the diesel igniting. The cetane rating of fuel, that is the speed at which it ignites, can differ. This is why the likes of Millers fuel additives (which increases cetane) claim to quieten the engine.

The higher the cetane the slower the diesel ignites under pressure - so the piston is at the top of its bore when the diesel ignites (which is good) as opposed to nearly at the top when it ignites (which is bad).

Pop some of your usual fuel in and give it a go.

That's brilliant. Thanks for your help. I'll give that a go and get back to you.
