Default Dark Coolant

I looked at a car last night. Now before I ask my question, please don't tell me not to buy it. I'm not going to. But I am just really curious as to why coolant would be dark.

The colour was dark brown but there was no oil at all, it was definitely not contaminated. It was a fine liquid just dark.

So to help my learning, does anyone know why coolant would be dark in colour?

Thanks very much.

The coolant system possibly full of gunk and crap, and as the water/coolant is circulating, it's picking it up and getting manky?

Get Flushed and changed, then you know where you stand if was yours but if going to buy it's very poor maintenance, buy at even higher risk than normal, bet it ain't got many receipts or service history.
Could be red coolant gone off, but something not happy. Coolant can only really mix with oil.

Or and highest chance they have used a stop leak fluid in it.
My book if in doubt walk away
