Default Air con/cooling fan problems

Hi all


Recently got a 2005 1.4hdi 307s and the cooking fan doesn't kick in, read that it has a slow speed for air con and high for engine cooling, fan was seized so put a new one on and still doesn't kick in, checked all the fuses and all good there, resistor seems Ok so not sure what to check next?

Also as I think it's linked my air con doesn't work, the dash light comes on when I press the button but there's no drop in engine revs to suggest the compressor is kicking in, could this just be a re gas? Or is it because of the cooling fan? Don't want to spend a fortune on a car I don't plan on keeping after 12 months really

You need to let the engine run in still air for some time before the fan will kick in, it should never come on in normal driving.
If the fan doesn't come on at all maybe it won't let the a/c work, the engine automatically compensates for loads such as the a/c, lights, wiper motor etc, s o the idle speed remains constant.
Does it pump out colder than ambient air?, if so it's working.

Thanks for the reply, so if I was to let the car sit at idle for half hour 40 mins it should kick in? If say the air on coldest setting is slightly colder than outside the car, so if that means it is working would a re gas bring it back to life?

Feel the 2 pipes that come from the aircon compressor or from the bulkhead. One should be hot and the other cold if the system is working. You can also check that the compressor clutch [on the front of the pulley] has pulled in and is spinning along with the pulley.
If it is low on gas, but has just enough to run the system, cooling will be poor.

If you can get hold of someone with Diagbox/PP2000 you can test the fan operation [slow and fast speeds] using the software.

Do you have a photo of the clutch in the out position? I don't know if mine has pulled in or is out but either way the pulley isn't spinning with everything else, could it just be stuck? Would I be able to free it by hand maybe ? With engine off obviously, wd40? I don't know, idont want to spend a fortune on a new setup when the car is only temporary

Relay under the bonnet slam panel?

Planet can fire up the fan at both speeds for testing.

Just been having a look around can't find relay but in my curiosity I pressed the pressure valve on the high and low pressure pipes and there was not the slightest wiff of anything escaping, I can spin the clutch freely, I can't find any obvious leaks but I know the car has never had a re gas in it's lifetime, should I just try one of those diy stop leak things off eBay with a re gas kit?

If you don't have any gas in the system then it simply won't work, there is a pressure switch to prevent the compressor clutch engaging if there is low (or no) pressure.
Get it tested for leaks, if it;s ok get it properly evacuated and refilled.
