Exclamation 307 SW 1.6 16v front shocks and coils broken? - RESOLVED

MOT is due in a couple of weeks so I had a look at my front coils on a 53reg 307 1.6 petrol. The coil springs seem to be ok but i noticed both plastic sleeves at the bottom of the coils are cracked/split, making impression like the coil itself snapped and deformed.
What is the actual function of those extra plastic sleeves and am I right thinking they might have been damaged while changing coils in the past but their condition does not affect the actual performance of the coil and it shouldn't be an issue on MOT?
Or is the coil actually fractured and the sleeve conceals the actual damage underneath?
regards
KJ

That looks like the coil is actually fractured under the plastic sleeve!

Talking Update

Taken the coils off the car today and both seem to be fine, i.e. in one piece. It's just the plastic sleeve has been put on them in two pieces for some reason (or damaged on the last change) making that impression of a fractured coil. Ironically both sides looked the same with plastic sleeve cuts in the same places with shorter bit first followed by a longer one?!
Will replace them anyway spending all the tame taking the struts out.
